Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian
Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang has been in consistent use for 275 years. Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang is an excellent formula for the treatment of food sensitivities causing headaches and neurological problems such as epilepsy. Most of its ingredients have a strengthening and anti-inflammatory effect on the digestive tract, helping to reduce the production and absorption of food allergens.
This formula extinguishes Internal Wind in aniamls prone to Dampness and Phlegm accumulation. Its primary use is for idiopathic epilepsy, but it is also useful in some cases of vestibular syndrome. ANY imporvement on this formula implies food sensitivity should be ruled out as a trigger for the seizures. It is particularly important that starch sources be eliminated from the diet. The main symptoms for this formula are those of Dampness which can include somnolence, lethargy, weight gains, rounded abdomen, oily coat, mucoid discharges, and a tendency to benign growths. If the Dampness has turned to Damp Heat, the atient may be heat intolerant, a change in EITHER thirst or appetite. Vomiting may be associated in the pre-ictal phase, or in general. Adverse effects from this formula have not been noted.

These ingredients constitute two smaller formulas, Er Chen Tang (Two Cured Decoction) and Li Shi Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang (Master Li's Decoction to Clear Summerheat and Raise the Qi). Er Chen Tang is the quintessential formula for the elimination of Phlegm. Classically, it contained Pinellia, Citrus, Poria, and Licourice. Pinellia dries Damp, transforms Phlegm, and directs rebellious Qi downward to stop nausea and vomiting. Citrus assists in restoring the normal descent of Qi, the cessation of nausea, and the transformation of Phlegm. Poria supports the Spleen, reducing the formation of and leeching out Damp. Licourice harmonizes the formula and gently tonifies the Stomach Qi. Gastrodia and Atractylodes were added to Er Chen Tang to make the earliest version of Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang. Atractylodes provides further Spleen support and dries and dispels Damp in the middle burner. Gastrodia assists Pinellia with its potent ability to transform Phlegm and extinguish Wind. It is standard practice to add a large block of herbs from Li Shi Qing Shu Yi Qi Tang to Ban Xia Bai Zhu Tian Ma Tang. These herbs include Alisma, Leaven, Ginseng, Astragalus, Phellodendron, and Atractylodes. Malt is also added. Alisma drains Damp via the Bladder, while Phellodendron clears secondary Damp Heat. Atractylodes dispels and dries Damp in the middle burner, while Ginseng and Astragalus tonify its Qi. Malt and Leaven contain digestive enzymes that facilitate improved Stomach function and help to prevent Food Stasis.
